The 420 is a double-handed planing dinghy with a true symmetric spinnaker. It was designed to be a stepping stone to the higher-performance Olympic class 470. The 420 is popular worldwide for double handed racing, especially team racing - a competition where two teams of three boats go head-to-head to achieve the best overall placing. Team racing tests much different skills than traditional fleet racing, such as aggressive tactics, rules knowledge, and team coordination.

TYPBC hosts 420 team racing for colleges around the Bay of Plenty regions. We have a fleet of six 420s chartered by the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academic Trust, perfect for team race practice. If you are a sports coordinator interested in starting a racing program at your school, please contact the Head Coach for inquiries and boat availability.
