FAQ

How can I contact the Sailing School?

Reach out to our coach Alec through email. If you're at the club, come down to the beach to see if any sailing programs are going on.

What sort of gear do I need for my sailing course?

What to bring? Of course, we provide the boats and sailing for Learn to Sail courses. We have some wet suits, spray jackets and buoyancy aids for new sailors but it's best to invest in your own if you’re really keen to get into sailing. Otherwise, please bring the following:

  • Dry clothes for after sailing

  • Clothing that is OK to get wet (wetsuit is best if you have one, otherwise swim wear and synthetic fabrics are ideal)

  • Waterproof jacket, and warm layers in the colder months

  • Cap or warm hat

  • Gloves (cycling gloves can be good too) – not completely necessary but good for grip

  • Booties or shoes to get wet – not completely necessary but good for grip

  • Towel

  • Bottle for water to stop dehydration

  • Medication (inhalers, etc.)

  • Snacks for after sailing, or lunch for an all day course

  • Long hair must be tied back and is best covered with a hat

How can I register myself/my child for a course without paying immediately?

  • On a PC – Once you have completed registering the sailor, and have selected the course, you will be given payment options. The first option will be ‘Credit via ezi-debit’ and the second will be ‘Other’. Select ‘Other’, this will allow an invoice to be sent to your chosen email and will need to be paid within two weeks or prior to the start of the course.

  • On mobile device - Once you have completed registering the sailor, and have selected the course, you will be given payment options. Under the title ‘Payment Options’ will be a drop down menu that initially reads ‘Credit via ezi-debit’ which you will need to click on. This will open the drop down bar with more payment options. Select ‘None (pay later)’, this will allow an invoice to be sent to your chosen email and will need to be paid within two weeks or prior to the start of the course.

Why can’t I see all of the course options?

  • In order for the correct courses to appear you must have entered an age into the system. This is done by typing in the correct Date of Birth so the correct age can be calculated. Once this is done, only the courses that you/your child are able to take part in will show.

How do I know what course myself/my child should be signed up for?

  • Children between the ages of 7 and 15 no experience – If your child is between these ages and has not previously had any sailing experience, they will be best suited for a Level 1 ‘Learn to Sail’ course.

  • Children between the ages of 7 and 15 with experience – If your child is between these ages and has sailed previously but you are unsure of what level they are, we can organize a private assessment to take place to the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club. Please email us to confirm a time. For more information please read through our Kids Learn to Sail page here.

  • Adults over the age of 15 – If you are over the age of 15 and have no sailing experience, your best-suited course will be an ‘Adult Learn to Sail, Level 1’. For more information please read through our Adult Learn to Sail page here.
